Spanish Language Arts and Reading

TEKS 128 THROUGH A NEW LENS

My name is Jon, and I live in the Georgetown/Round Rock area.

I’m conducting research for a series of educational articles exploring issues in Spanish literacy for both native speakers and second-language learners, with applications in:

  • Spanish Language Arts and Reading
  • Bilingual education
  • Dual-language education
  • LOTE Spanish

My work focuses on literacy skills identified in TEKS Chapter 128, Spanish Language Arts and Reading, including:

  • Vowels and consonants
  • Syllables and syllabification
  • Diphthongs and hiatus
  • Stress and written accents
  • Word structure and morphology
  • Decoding and spelling multisyllabic words

I am inviting area Spanish educators to participate in my research by viewing teacher-facing and student-facing videos and completing before-and-after questionnaires.

Below is a sample from one strand of the larger project: a teacher-facing video presenting a novel approach to stress and written accents.

The video demonstrates the use of shapes, colors, metaphor, animation, and everyday language. These features are incorporated throughout the different strands of the project to make important concepts clearer, quicker to teach, and easier to connect with meaningful language use and vocabulary development.

Participation would meet TEA requirements for independent-study CPE when the material relates to the educator’s certificate and professional responsibilities. Independent study may account for up to 20 percent of required renewal hours.

Educators should review the TEA guidance and determine applicability to their own certificates.

STRESS IN SPANISH THROUGH A NEW LENS

This video is a sample from a series of teacher-facing videos.

It presents the theoretical foundation behind one strand of the larger project.

The student-facing method and materials are simpler, but are certainly in the same spirit.
